While it might be appealing to go directly to the "cheapest" carrier for your insurance, what you pay for car insurance literally depends on thousands of factors, from your zip code and age to the type of coverage you buy and the car you drive.

That being said, one of the most frustrating parts of buying car insurance is that it's nearly impossible to figure out how much it costs without getting a quote.

At Coverage Cat, we use data collected from millions of real auto insurance quotes to get you moving in the right direction.

Our #1 tip for getting cheaper car insurance in Texas?

Get quotes from smaller companies. Whether you drive a Ford F-150 or a Toyota Camry, smaller companies like Mercury, Clearcover, and Elephant offer Texans the best insurance rates. Acuity, Gainsco, and Dairyland are also good choices for lower car insurance premiums in Texas.

If you’d rather skip submitting a quote request to each of these companies, get a quote from us — we’ll find your best insurance policy across dozens of insurance companies. We’re hassle free, we don’t call, we send minimal emails — and we can save you time (and usually money).

About this Texas car insurance guide

We prepared the data and wrote this guide to help people who want to make smart money choices based on real data and sound advice (not conventional wisdom).

Figuring out the best deal for your Texas auto insurance isn't easy, since prices and eligibility can vary substantially across individuals and insurers don’t show you the cost differences.

Caveat: this data, which reflects the insurance quotes other drivers have been offered, may or not be especially relevant for you. The data presented here is intended to give you a ballpark estimate of your own potential premiums and are not quotes.

Why you should trust Coverage Cat

I’m Max Cho, a licensed insurance agent and the founder/CEO of Coverage Cat. I first started navigating insurance and efficiently finding out how to use it and buy it more than 15 years ago, when an injury left me missing two teeth. That experience inspired me to start Coverage Cat, as a way for people to discover transparent price data about their insurance and make better choices with that information. I want to help all Americans avoid overpaying for expensive insurance they don't need and get the right coverage at the right price.

Before founding Coverage Cat and becoming a licensed insurance agent, I spent the past ten years working in quantitative roles at Google, Two Sigma, and Microsoft.

Methodology

For this guide, we constructed a unique database of tens of thousands of auto insurance quotes derived from public data. When you try our insurance quoting system, we use this dataset and others to match Coverage Cat users with the best insurance for their needs.

To determine our top picks, Coverage Cat generated over 76,000 quotes for Texas drivers. Within this dataset, we represented drivers from ages 16-70, driving vehicles that were up to 15 years old, and from a variety of makes.

By using thousands of quotes, we’re able to better understand the available data and leverage data modeling to provide a median of randomly-generated Texas drivers.

For our comparisons on insurance price, we’ve chosen to exclude carriers with fewer than 1,000 quotes to prevent imbalanced comparisons. Internally, we use this dataset and others to match Coverage Cat users with the best insurance for their needs.

Our dataset is continuously adjusted and presented to you in real time. Specific numbers in this article may vary slightly from the latest data contained in the graphs above.

Cheapest car insurance for senior Texas drivers

Coverage Cat found that Progressive had the lowest rates for TX drivers aged 60-70 with premiums of approximately $75/month. The range for these rates, however, was wide, and the least expensive policy saving the median Texan aged 60-70 $1,788/year compared to the most expensive policy.

What you need to know about Texas car insurance 1. If you are the owner of a car, Texas requires you have car insurance.

  1. Texas is an “at fault” state, which means if you are found to have caused an accident, you and your insurance company are responsible for all damages related to the accident.
  2. The minimum coverage requirement in Texas, by law, is 30/60/25. What this means
  3. In Texas, after an accident or ticket, your auto insurance may go up.

Tip: You may also need car insurance if you regularly rent or borrow cars, since it can be both cheaper and provide more security to have a non-owner policy that will cover your liability.

Being a good driver matters a lot

If you do not have a clean driving record, your insurance rates will be higher than the ones suggested here, no matter which insurer you choose. Expect 20-25% increases for moving violations and distracted driving; 25-30% increases for open containers, speeding, and causing a crash; and 50-70% increases for driving without a license, a DUI, or racing.

If it has been more than three years since you lost your good driver status, it’s time to shop for new car insurance.
